Expectations suck the life out of possibility; surrender them whenever possible.

Having a positive attitude and expecting the best from a situation is a great approach to life. Doing so allows you feel good while easing into uncertain situations. However, there is a difference between going forth positively and placing unrealistic expectations that could lead to pressure and disappointment.

We do this all of the time in relationships and even in anticipating events in life. At drinks with a friend, we were discussing the status of a guy she has been dating. She has always had a love life that could make Marilyn Monroe blush, but this time she wasn’t sure what the future would hold. I urged her to relax and see what happens, abandoning expectations while staying open to all possibilities. A very unnatural approach for most of us, including myself, but when practiced it allows everyone involved to breathe a sigh of relief. Moreover, things can turn out better than you could have ever imagined. When I first met my husband, I had zero expectations and nothing could have prepared me for the love we would eventually share.

Whether you have a meeting, a date or are about to embark on a new chapter in your life, surrender and release expectations about how it should unfold and allow wonderful possibilities you could have never imagined to do their thing.
