Simple, Yet Kind Gestures

Pay attention to ways that you can help people around you in simple ways. These little things add up and you could change someone’s life.

When I found out I had cancer I worked for a week or two before starting treatment. I remember sitting around the break room with a bunch of coworkers who looked at me as if I had two heads because nobody knew what to say. We were all in our early twenties and most had never known anyone who had the c-word. As I sat there feeling pretty awkward, a girl that I had never liked or gotten along with (and the feeling was mutual) got up to go back to work but before she left, she walked over and without saying a word she smiled and gave my shoulders a quick, reassuring squeeze. I’m certain that nobody else in the room even noticed what she had done, but it meant the world to me at that moment. So much so that I’ve never forgotten it and reflected on it more times than I could count.

Every day you can find some simple thing to do to help someone. They may not even care (which happens a lot) or it may mean more to them than you could ever imagine.
